A Visit to NightCare in Southeast Asia

Written By: Tanya Lasko (Program Coordinator)

Before little Taeaik was born, her mother was homeless and wandered the streets of the busy Southeast Asian city where she lived. One night, filled with uncertainty and fear about the future, her mom walked by a NightCare Center. Thankfully, she came inside and learned that NightCare could help give her unborn baby a better future.

A few weeks after the infant arrived, her mom brought Taeaik to NightCare, where, thanks to the support of our generous donors, she received consistent care, love, and attention. NightCare has become her haven, where her gentle soul has blossomed. The love she has received here has even extended after hours.

When Taeaik’s mother found herself in dire straits, with no money and a sick baby, she had nowhere to turn but to the nannies at NightCare. Despite their financial struggles, these dedicated caregivers selflessly sacrificed part of their pay to provide food and medicine for Taeaik. Their care and attention ensured Taeaik’s recovery.
At the core of NightCare’s mission is the powerful partnership between our generous donors and dedicated team members on the ground. This combination of love and generosity is vital! The alliance ensures every baby and toddler in NightCare receives the support they need.
Together, we are giving these little ones a chance at a brighter future!
Taeaik came in as a crying infant. Soon, she will age out at six years old. She is an excellent role model to the new little ones coming in. She is gentle, obedient, caring, and bright. Our donors deserve significant credit. Thank you!
A ‘Crier’ No More

During this same visit, I saw Sreynea, 15 months old, and Sreylia, 7 months old, both of whom I met on a prior visit. The younger of the sisters had been in NightCare for five months. During that time, she affectionately became known as “the crier.”
At first, the younger girl’s distress was due to hunger and a lack of nutrition. This led to a succession of illnesses. Thankfully, she improved physically, but her need for emotional connection still led to many angry outbursts.
Since I last saw her, Sreylia seemed quite relaxed. She had a pacifier in her mouth and moved about without having to be constantly cared for. Secure bonding was giving her wings to fly!

Settling in for Sleep

The evening at this NightCare Center began with hugs and kisses from more arriving little ones. This is a tremendous testimony to the love and trauma care they receive each night.
Complete mayhem ensued for the next hour and a half during playtime. Structure, manners, and self-control took over, though, during mealtime and circle song time before bed. The need for sleep began to show on the little ones’ faces during circle time.
Before we left, I snuck upstairs to see the babies. The five of them had just been fed formula. Nannies patted their backs to let them know it was safe to fall asleep. A deep feeling of gratitude welled up inside as I thought, “Our donors do this! Without their generosity, we could not provide these little ones’ basic needs or the safety so vital to their development.”

Thank you merely scratches the surface of our love and appreciation for you! You mean the world to us.

For the babies and toddlers,
